Born and reared in Newark, New Jersey, Lisa Durden is the third of five children. And yes, she has all the attributes of the “middle child” syndrome!” Although she grew up with both her parents, John and Margaret Durden, they were very poor! They didn’t always have the most stylish clothes and up to date toys, but what her parents always instilled in her and her siblings was the importance of getting an education!!
Lisa is a strong fixture in her community. Holding such positions as Vice Chair of Membership for Diversity Newark, formerly a New Jersey based organization that helped to bring diverse groups of people together in Newark and the surrounding cities. Regina Jackson has made it her mission to invest in the future of children. She has taken on the challenge of molding, and mentoring young people in her hometown of Oakland, CA. Regina believes her biggest challenge is combating hopelessness. When young people don’t have high expectations, they often won’t try. A lifelong creative, Dania W. Frink has worked across the spectrum of the arts. She has extensive experience in communications, marketing, public relations and design; currently leading global digital marketing for a medical device company. Charmaine is Director of the Learning Policy Institute Washington, DC office and is a Senior Researcher. Previously she worked at the Alliance for Excellent Education as the Vice President for policy and advocacy in standards, assessments and deeper learning and as the Director of policy and research for Communities for Teaching Excellence. Mercer also served in the federal government, including as the special assistant to the assistant secretary of the Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development at the U.S. Department of Education and as an analyst for the Congretional Research Service. Kira L. Allen
The Oakland based author, artist, activist, advocate, and facilitator, Kira Lynne Allen holds an M.A. in Transformative Arts from John F. Kennedy University, and a B.A. in English/Creative Writing from Mills College. Still, she honors Poetry For the People workshops at Glide Memorial Church in SF as the place where she found her voice and the courage to face her struggles as a single mother, sexual abuse survivor, and recovering addict. Now, Ms. Kira delivers phenomenal workshops and performances combining poetry and art to empower her community www.writethissec.com. Fern A. Stroud
A gifted musician and tenure of IT Software Development Project Management, Fern's life work is to bridge the gap between business, art, and community. Her vision has been realized through successful partnership, board service, and other initiatives including production of Black Vines - A Toast to Black Wineries and Diverse Art.
Fern earned a B.S. in Computer Information Systems and completed a software development internship at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Palo Alto, California. She currently manages Big Data related efforts in Silicon Valley. Location: Oakland, California
Courtney has dedicated her career path to urban education. She has worked as a classroom teacher, for education nonprofits, and in higher education. She has served in Atlanta Public Schools, Los Angeles Unified School District, and currently, the District of Columbia. She also spent a short period of time working in Corporate America as a recruiter in the accounting and finance industry. She is the daughter of public servants. Her mother is a retired school teacher who taught for 37 years, and her father works in finance for the City of Ventura. She deeply believes in the gifts and abilities of every child. She believes schools are essential to nurturing and cultivating those gifts--the hearts, minds, and spirits of tomorrow’s future. Courtney holds a Masters of Education in Mathematics Education in Teacher Leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park, a Teaching Credential in Secondary Mathematics from Mercer University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics/Economics from Emory University. Courtney is also passionate about traveling in her free time, domestically and internationally. To date, she has visited 12 countries, across 4 continents. Location: Washington, D.C.

Mable Haddock has spent the past three decades advocating for and supporting social issue media and media makers of color and served as Founding Director of the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC), a national non-profit media arts organization committed to developing compelling programming about the African Diaspora for public television. Ericka "Miss.Ericka" Duke is an Art teacher at West Oakland Middle School, self-taught jewelry artist, and doctoral student at the University of San Francisco. Ericka's research examines the experiences of Black women of the African Diaspora utilizing Karen Seneferu's notion of "viewing the Black women as a God," bell hooks' concept of "talking back" and the liberated voice. She looks to the intersections of feminism and blackness to explore how Black women can rightfully claim their voices in predominately white spaces. In her classroom space, she focuses on the discourse of Art in the Oakland community and how local artist combat social inequities via their unique art forms to make sense of their own communities.
