Teacher Truth: Ericka Duke

"I’m an eighth grade English Language Arts teacher in New Orleans, Louisiana and doctoral student at Xavier University of Louisiana. My scholarship focuses on the character traits of Black Women teachers and how our identities inform how we create platforms of transformation for the Black students we teach.

As an English Language Arts teacher my teaching sits at the intersections of telling of narratives and introducing narratives; while listening to and viewing narratives live in action. My classroom is a creative space and critical space in a manner of love.

In addition to teaching and my studies as a doctoral student, I tutor Black girls and Black boys in regards to enhancing their reading literacy skills. Within my tutoring sessions a sense of self awareness is built through engaging with literature centered around blackness and the world-- and narratives of Black girls and boys discovered.

Outside of my role as a teacher and student, you can find me in the gym working out, biking around the city, or purchasing a bottle of wine."
