Grounding in Spirit | COVID REFLECTION

“2020 has been a year that taught me what I could live without, but more importantly, what I need to thrive.”

SUMBMITTED BY E’RIKA CHAMBERS

2020 has been a year that taught me what I could live without, but more importantly, what I need to thrive. Over the years, my values have centered around spirituality, family, and community. While this year was no different, I felt a shift internally.

My family values have remained the same. My spiritual practice has shifted a bit and is growing stronger daily. I am intentional with my spiritual development to ensure it is paramount above all else. Being in and with the community has taken on new meaning. Amidst the constant need to move at the speed of “Whiteness,” life happens. Beyond the continuous screen time, stay-at-home orders, 6ft social distancing, and Zooming through the day, four of my G.E.M.s (Grandmothers, Elders, and Matriarchs) went home to Glory, including my angel, my Grandmother. With these notable losses, I learned to be present and engaged. I never know when God will be sending a new elder to join my spiritual circle, praying for me, speaking life into me, pushing me towards my purpose, mentoring me, and genuinely caring about my well-being. That right there is what has kept me pressing toward the mark! Faith, Family, and Community.
